The Genetic Basis for Human Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
This book is part of a series called Fundamental and Clinical Aspects of Internal Medicine, a series of volumes for a postgraduate course. Short chapters cover the subjects of cytogenetics, mendelian genetics, genetic markers, multifactorial inheritance, biochemical genetics, genetics of cancer, and treatment of genetic disease. It attempts to be a fairly comprehensive resource for clinicians who want to be aware of how genetic knowledge can help them in management of their patients' disease. The chapters are succinct and pertinent. There are a number of black and white photographic reproductions which illustrate classical genetic disorders in patients and idealized pedigrees which illustrate mendelian genetics. There are drawings but no photographs of chromosomes in metaphase. A short, fairly comprehensive index and a selection of general references, including both textbook references and references to the original literature, serve to make this book an easy resource to use. The book, short and concise, is by no means complete but appears to be accurate in what it has done. It can be recommended for clinicians who wish to bring themselves up to date in new developments in clinical genetics in a short time. It can be recommended as a review book for medical students who wish to recall their information about the clinical aspects of human genetics. It can not be recommended as a textbook for a medical genetics course and will be most useful when used in conjunction with the literature references which it contains.

Stem Cells Application in Modeling of Human Genetic Diseases
The use of animal models in modeling of human genetic disease has many advantages. In some cases, however, this method may not be applicable due to some limitations, such as differences in tissue composition, anatomy and physiology of humans and animals. Isogenic human disease models are a population of cells that are selected or engineered to model a specific genetic disease, in vitro. They ar...
متن کاملHuman Microbiome
Humans are almost identical in their genetic pattern, but the slight differences in our DNA lead to remarkable phenotypic variation among the human population. There are a variety of microbial communities and their genes (microbiomes) in the human body that play an essential role in human health and disease. The microbes inhabiting our bodies is quite a bit more variable, with only a third of i...
متن کاملProbability Model of Allele Frequency of Alzheimer’s Disease Genetic Risk Factor
Background and Purpose: The identification of genetics risk factors of human diseases is very important. This study is conducted to model the allele frequencies (AFs) of Alzheimer’s disease. Materials and Methods: In this study, several candidate probability distributions are fitted on a data set of Alzheimer’s disease genetic risk factor. Unknown parameters of the considered dis...
متن کاملGenetic Affinity of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolex in Human and Sheep in East Azerbaijan, Iran
Echinococcosis caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) is known as an important zoonotic disease in various parts of the world, including Iran. The genetic diversity of this parasite is very high, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic. It has been suggested in the literature from different parts of the world that diverse facto...
متن کاملSHOX2 and WT1 Promoter Methylation Correlates with the Lung Cancer in Iranian Patients
Lung cancer is among the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Since the disease is diagnosed in the middle or late stages of the cancer development a more efficient method for an early diagnosis of the disease is required. The main goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between aberrant promoter methylation of the two genes: SHOX2(Short stature homeobox 2) and WT1(Wilm...
متن کاملSample Preparation for Secretome Analysis in A*-Type Strains of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, the Causal Agent of Asiatic Citrus Canker Disease
Xanthomonas citri subsp citri (Xcc) is responsible for one of the most destructive diseases of citrus fruits, Asiatic citrus canker. Based on the bacterial host range, the pathogenic forms, A, A*, and Aw have been identified. A*-type strains are not well characterized and they have been reported to differ from other A-type strains on the basis of biochemical and genetic characteristics. In this...
